CHAPTER EIGHT

Neal held the tie in a light hand, guiding her into the waiting room when they reached the vet clinic a few minutes later. He spoke when the receptionist faced him. “Hi. I just called about the pregnant bitch I found in my garage.”

She smiled, leaning over the counter to take in the pooch. “Have a seat for right now and I’ll give you the paperwork to start.”

Neal shrugged. Doug followed and they claimed two seats near a corner. The round-as-a-turnip dog carefully spread out at his feet.

Neal studied her. Doug was right. She was clearly not a homeless type of dog. He hid his sigh. People were cruel. That was a given. He saw it every day at work, but abandonment like this was its own kind of cruelty.

“Mr. Romo? If you could fill this out with what you know.” She offered a clipboard to him over the counter.

“Thanks.” He took it in hand and returned to his seat. There really wasn’t much he knew in the way of information to give them about the dog. He knew the majority of what they wanted to know was how they’d be paid for today.

He left the dog’s name blank. He was torn about what to do with her. He was hoping it wasn’t that she’d been dumped, but that maybe she’d escaped. And that she had a chip. Or a worried family had put up a listing looking for her.

Doug’s phone buzzed and he pulled it out to check a text. “It’s just Shawn.” He held up the phone to show the screen. “They’re at the beach.”

Neal glanced up from the paperwork to see a cute blond being wrestled from behind by a muscled-looking guy. “They’re having fun.”

“He’s trying to make me jealous. He knows I love the beach.” Doug chuckled.

“Is that his boyfriend?”

“I think so. I know he’s taken, but I haven’t met anyone.” He sent a quick text in answer to the photo. “Do you like doing that? Going to the beach?”

Neal snickered, focused on the questions in front of him. “Have you forgotten where you are?”

Doug put his phone away. “Maybe a little payback for that photo?” he said in a plotting way.

Neal twisted toward him, a flash of deviltry playing over his face. “I do believe I like the way you think.”

“Mr. Romo?” A vet tech called from an entry door.

“Want me to come or wait?”

“Come,” Neal answered without hesitation.

They both stood and followed the tech with a not too spry dog at their heels. Neal guessed she was starting to feel the pending hours.

“Okay. If you could put her on the table for me.”

“I’ll try. She’s friendly, but I don’t know her personality.”

The tech gave him a misunderstanding look.

“We’d just finished dropping damaged carpeting in the garage when she made herself known. She was probably hiding under one of the storage shelves. She’s a stray.” Neal bent down.

The tech gave a nod. “See if she’s comfortable enough with being lifted and I’ll scan her for a chip.
